Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $99,635)

The Chamber Coalition for a Better Community serves Angelina County, Texas, a rural area with a population of 80,513,which is 75.1% white,14.7% African American,and 14.3% Hispanic. The goals are to: 1) reduce subtance abuse by 10% each year; and 2)strengthen collaboration between prevention, intervention, and treatment services through community mobilization and empowerment. To achieve these goals the coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) make parenting classes available for all parents and grandparents; 2) initiate a family day at the zoo; 3) make educational presentations to civic clubs, organizations, and parent groups; 3) develop public service announcements for television, radio, and in newspapers; 4) increase membership in middle and high school drug-free clubs; 5) work with the Drug-Free All Stars on media advocacy training, prevention activities; 6) initiate the Shattered Dreams campaign at interested county high schools; 7) increase business participation in the drug prevention efforts; 8)initiate the Parent University 2005 for parents, grandparents, caregivers, counselors, and teachers; 9) update the prevention, intervention, and treatment matrix of Angelina County; and 10) evaluate the 2003 drug survey information and present the results to the community.
