Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)
The Partnership of Community Resources Coalition serves Douglas County, Nevada, a suburban area with a population of 45,603. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth, and 2) strengthen the anti-drug component of the coalition. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) fund model programs in schools and in the community for a target population of identified youth "at risk" of participating in problem behaviors associated with Douglas County's prioritized risk factors;
2) raise the age of onset by educating universal target population through Teen Prevention Clubs focusing on alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and over-the-counter drugs. Teens will plan activities, events, classroom and community presentations on health risks, and provide protective options for fellow youth, such as Substance Free Family Night;
3) provide asset training to community members, parents, and business owners;
4) increase community participation in the coalition by planning and carrying out focus groups;
5) hold neighborhood meetings offering training in parenting skills, substances, and local laws and encourage participants to become engaged in community prevention activities;
6) disseminate information by becoming a local contact for all prevention materials and resources; and
7) collect data specific to the 18-25 year old population to ultimately get this population involved with the coalition.
