Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $80,638)

Columbia Community Mental Health is the fiscal agent for the Rainier Together Coalition. This coalition serves the very rural Rainier School District in northwest Oregon. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and over time among adults by addressing the factors in a community that serve to increase the risk of substance abuse and the factors that serve to minimize the risk of substance abuse; and 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies to support community coalition efforts to prevent and to reduce substance abuse.
To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the perception of harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD);
2) decrease the perception of the availability of drugs;
3) support middle school prevention programming by using Botvin's Life Skills curriculum;
4) provide awareness, education, and training in risk/protective factors, assets, and resiliency;
5) sponsor alternative activities;
6) sponsor parenting education; and
7) recruit new members and work to strengthen collaborative efforts among community sectors. CA/NCF
