The Inland Counseling Network is the fiscal agent for the Columbia County Community Mobilization Against Substance Abuse Coalition. The coalition serves Columbia County, a rural community in southeast Washington. The population of the county is 4,200. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) educate young children to prevent or delay first use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; 2) improve parents' family management skills; 3) act as catalyst to develop an action plan to address the problem of underage drinking in Columbia County; and, 4) enhance community collaboration to prevent substance abuse among youth. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) sponsor family and youth activities that promote healthy decision-
making;
2) build cohesion between teen volunteers and positive adult role models;
3) strengthen parents' skills in nurturing and child management;
4) establish a task force of youth and adults to develop media strategies;
5) teach skills that enable youth to resist peer pressure;
6) increase community awareness about underage drinking and other youth drug
use problems; and
7) expand the number of coalition partners and increase interagency collaboration.
