FY 20043 Continuation Drug-Free Support Program

The Sussex County Coalition for Healthy and Safe Families( SCCHSF) serves Sussex County, NJ, a suburban area with a population of 144,165, which is 96.6% Caucasian and 19.9% school age children. The goals of the program are to: 1) enhance collaboration among all segments of the community by strengthening and supporting the efforts of the SCCHSF; and 2) reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs by Sussex County youth. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) disseminate prevention materials and newsletters;
2) educate parents, caregivers, teachers, and community members with presentations designed to increase awareness of trends, signs and symptoms of drug use among youth with special emphasis on marijuana, heroin and ecstasy;
3) address bullying with a countywide middle school summit designed to empower students to affect change in their schools;
4) continue "anti-drug" media campaign to increase awareness among youth and parents of importance of healthy choices;
5) use the parent task force to address underage drinking with "Town Hall" meetings and a media campaign to increase awareness of the liability aspect for parents who allow or condone youth to use alcohol; and 6) implement a media campaign for underage drinking with the youth task force. CA/NCF
