Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)
The Coalition of Behavioral Health Services serves metropolitan Houston, an urban area with a population of 3.5 million. The coalition goals are to: 1) reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drugs among youth; and 2) establish and strengthen community collaboration. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1)develop a county wide Youth Coalition utilizing peer mentors and building membership among the youth from the feeder schools;
2) implement Shattered Dreams in one of the high schools - a reenactment of a drunk driver;
3) bring Youth-to-Youth trainers to Houston to work with staff, parents and youth to implement the Youth to Youth curriculum;
4) collaborate with the health care community to educate the medical field about the importance of early ATOD screening, brief intervention, referral and treatment; and
5) collaborate with the business community to educate the work force about ATOD prevention with their own children. CA/NCF
