Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $1,000,000)
Utah State University began implementing the Youth and Families with Promise Program in 2000. Youth and Families with Promise is a two tiered mentoring program that provides mentors and grand mentors to youth 10-14 years of age, along with their parents and siblings. The program utilizes existing federal resources to coordinate the YFP activities. The cooperative extension agent in each participating Utah county identifies youth mentors and grand mentors for mentoring activities, family night out activities other group activities. These activities address four program goals: 1) Reduce and prevent delinquent behavior 2) Improve academic performance 3) increase interpersonal competence 4) Strengthen family bonds and decrease family dysfunction.
