Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2003, $75,000)

The Suffolk County Probation Department in conjunction with the South County School District uses a holistic multiagency approach to prevent and reduce truancy in the target community. This will be accomplished by assessing and addressing the underlying causes, which contribute to the symptom of school absenteeism. A probation officer serving as case coordinator is based in two schools. The case coordinator works with the police and probation officers in monitoring student truancy cases. Truant students will be referred to the program by school personnel, probation officers, police and parents. Approximately, 200 students will be served in the truancy reduction program. In addition a reward/incentive program for school attendance will be added. The collaborative partners include the Suffolk County Police Department, the Parent Teacher Student Association, the Bellport Area County Action Committee/Boys and Girls Club of Brookhaven Town, Youth Bureau and representatives of the area Weed and Seed Advisory Community. The target population is fourth through twelfth grade students who have already demonstrated a pattern of truancy. Siblings of truants and students exhibiting several risk factors for truancy as well as juvenile delinquents and those designated as "Persons in Need of Supervision" (PIN), from the school district will also be targeted.
