Evaluation of the Safe Start Initiative

The National Evaluation of the Safe Start Initiative is designed to document and assess communities' efforts to reduce the impact of family and community violence on young children. It must reflect and document communities' efforts in each of the three phases of the initiative. Year 2 evaluation efforts have focused on understanding the transition from the Phase I assessment and planning process to the early implementation phases. National evaluation activities during this phase of the Safe Start initiative have targeted four critical areas: (1) conducting a cross-site process evaluation of the planning phase and the early implementation phase; (2) working with each site to add community-specific modules to the community survey; (3) building local evaluation capacity; and (4) working with the sites to clarify and understand their implementation plans and to develop a relevant framework for the cross-site impact evaluation.
