An Achievable Dream, Inc. (AAD) is a public/private partnership operating within the Newport News, Virginia Public School System whose focus is to provide at-risk students with the skills and tools they will need to complete school and become successful adults,citizens and workers. AAD will continue to address the special needs of the students by implementing an afterschool project, for selected students. This project will provide students with academic support including tutoring services and recreational activities in a safe and secure environment. Funds from this grant will support the extended day and extended year program at AAD. It is intended that the additional time will assist students in meeting or exceeding state and local standards in the core academic areas and provide safety for students through the extended supervised time. In addition AAD will contribute to improving the health of students through physical fitness. The target population is K-8 graders and to serve 750 students. The goals are to: successfully pass the Virginia Standards of Learning tests and make adequate yearly progress as measured by No Child Left Behind; to successfully close gap in achievement and to demonstrate improved school attendance and behavior.NCA/NCF
