Description of original award (Fiscal Year 1999, $100,000)

Operation QT (Quality Time), Inc., is a nonprofit organization established to provide positive activites during non school hours in 15 locations in South and West Phoenix. The afterschool program will serve children 6 to 18 and provide services in a safe supervised setting. Additionally the program will provide remedial educational services, tutoring, recreational and positive peer relationship building.
The program activities include: arts and crafts, computer classes, basketball, volleyball, aerobics, music and dance, gardening, field trips, etc.
Each school has identified specific activities that will be provided at their respective site. Primarily, academic However, focus will be on reading and English and volunteers from the community, will be encouraged to be tutors. Parents and students are encouraged to participate in English classes to enhance their academic and vocational skills. Families will be further strengthened by parent and child participation in the computer lab (in some instances, they envision children teaching their parents how to use the computer), and the parents and their children can enjoy a hobby together, but also learn new occupational skills.
