Description of original award (Fiscal Year 1999, $2,000,000)

The purpose of this program is to provide daily after-school education, recreation, and enrichment activities to 2,800 children, who would otherwise remain unsupervised. The children come from 29 elementary schools in high crime, high need areas, and this program will be implemented over a two-year period. LA's BEST continues to contribute to the healthy development of all children by addressing the following critical community needs: 1) supervising children in neighborhoods most vulnerable to drugs, gangs and crime; 2) providing academic support and enrichment to children; 3) reducing tolerance for violence; 4) helping to build empathy in children; and 5) developing children by teaching them social competency skills, including controlling impulses and managing anger. This multi-pronged approach to after-school programming has allowed LA's BEST to play a key role in positively impacting the lives of children throughout the City of Los Angeles. NCA/NCF
