Description of original award (Fiscal Year 1999, $1,299,596)
The Suffolk University Law School's Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) provides legal representation to indigent juveniles in the Boston, Massachusetts area courts. The Center also offers training, for developing or improving juvenile defender skills, to law students and to members of the defense bar. Further, the Center pursues advocacy, outreach, and policy analysis initiatives in the interest of its clientele. "In FY 2004, the Juvenile Justice Center will continue to offer juveniles in Boston-area courts vigorous defense and a comprehensive set of social services. The Center will continue to work to 1) assure children's rights are observed and defended in the courts they pass through and that 2) their experience in the juvenile justice system includes the opportunity to comprehensively address the root issues - if there are any - which might have caused their arrest."
