Adult Counseling Exchange is the fiscal agent for the Near Westside Prevention Coalition. The coalition serves the Denver, CO, metropolitan area, which has a population of 554,636. Past accomplishments of the coalition include implementing direct prevention activities in schools and community venues; promoting policy changes that restrict access to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD); developing and implementing a program to build concrete skills to resist drugs, strengthen personal commitments against drug use, and increase social competency; working with the Treatment Alternatives to Street Crimes Adolescent Network to address drug prevention education on the front end to help keep juveniles out of jail; and hosting "Come-Togethers", events facilitated by young people that served as a vehicle for learning about current perceptions about drug use and how to change them among the school-aged youth in Denver.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) developing, obtaining, and disseminating 2000 alcohol-specific fact-sheets, pamphlets and posters (e.g. FACE materials) geared for young people and parents; 2) contacting 50 local alcohol distributors, retailers, and outlets to gain their assistance in restricting youth access to alcohol by participating in the coalition's program where local merchants sign pledges to diligently proof and confiscate false identifications; 3) providing parent/teen communication training for parents and caretakers at multiple sites throughout the County, including 8-10 schools and/or community-based agencies which will host events involving 60-120 parents/caretakers throughout the school year; and 4) convening at least one major Countywide forum focusing on the theme of "the role of community policing in reducing and preventing youth ATOD use" to be attended by 100 police personnel, elected officials, and community leaders.
