The Giles County Youth-Adult Partnership, with New River Valley Community Services as its fiscal agent, will continue to work toward the goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening collaboration among community sectors. Coalition objectives include: (1) strengthening bonding with a caring adult, explaining health beliefs, setting clear standards, and providing meaningful opportunities for youth; (2) understanding the scope of substance abuse among youth in the county; and (3) providing coordinated prevention and treatment services to youth. The coalition will continue to support PULSAR, Study Buddies, and other after-school programs. Life skills training will be offered to eighth graders in two schools and in an after-school program. Teen activity nights will be regularly scheduled and graduation celebrations will be organized. Monthly meetings of the Partnership will continue and meetings for all youth serving agencies, organizations, local government and interested businesses will be organized. The coalition plans to complete a collaborative, community-based prevention plan, based on risk and protective factors identified in the Search Institute Survey.
