United Way of Santa Cruz County is the fiscal agent for Together for Youth/Unidos Para Nuestro Jovenes. The coalition serves Santa Cruz County, CA, an area with a population of 260,200. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by successfully recruiting participation from underrepresented Latino, youth, and county organizations; bringing together 14 youth-serving agencies to form the Youth Development Alliance; working with a consortium of local school districts, law enforcement agencies, and the County Health Department to coordinate the biennial countywide survey of students that provides the collaborative with detailed outcome data regarding youth substance use, violence, and local risk and protective factors; and leading successful resource development activities.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) providing training and support to the 14 youth-serving organization members of the Youth Development Alliance; 2) disseminating outcome findings of the 2002-2003 Santa Cruz County Student Survey through a press conference, fact sheets, and at least 10 presentations to school boards and administrators, elected officials, parents, and service organizations; 3) producing 4 issues of a youth-run magazine; 4) developing youth leadership through the establishment of a youth advocacy team; 5) conducting an annual coalition retreat to develop an annual and a 5-year plan; 6) establishing and supporting ad hoc working groups dedicated to specific objectives from the coalition annual plan; 7) convening bimonthly meetings of the Together for Youth executive committee and bimonthly Together for Youth roundtable meetings; and 8) conducting a media and government official outreach and education program.
