PROJECT SUMMARY FOR GRANT 1999-JN-FX-0065 (S-4)

The West Texas Council/Chamizal Community Coalition serves the South Central area of El Paso where 52 percent of the population is under the age of 25. The project will target marijuana, alcohol, tobacco, heroin, and cocaine use and abuse. The first goal of the program is to reduce youth substance abuse by 10 percent. This will be accomplished through; 1) increasing the perception of risk among youth in elementary, middle and high school; 2) increasing the perception of social disapproval of use among peers and adults; 3) reducing the use and prevalence of ATOD among youth; and 4) delaying the onset of use by 12 months. The second goal is to strengthen collaboration among coalition members by 10 percent. This will be accomplished through: increasing and improving the level of collaboration; 2) increasing coalition membership, interagency agreements, and contacts, 3) increasing citizen participation in substance abuse prevention efforts; and 4) increasing prevention planning and prevention efforts among community coalition and other sectors.
