Description of original award (Fiscal Year 1999, $73,856)
The General Hospital Corporation is the fiscal agent for Revere CARES. The coalition serves the city of Revere, MA, an urban area with a population of 47,000. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by developing a survey of adult attitudes toward adolescent alcohol and drug use, respondents' alcohol and drug use, and awareness of the National Media Campaign on Adolescent Drug Use; hosting a Night Out Celebration; presenting a Five-Year Progress Report to the community; continuing to be involved in a Sign Campaign to reduce Revere youth's exposure to advertising of alcohol and tobacco through the strict enforcement of existing ordinances governing signage in store windows and store fronts; revising the coalition's Action Plan to include the objective of increasing the participation of Latino, Cambodian, and Muslim communities in Revere CARES programs and activities; and expanding the population served by the Coalition to include children/adolescents, their families, and the extended community.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) the Community Awareness Campaign, intended to increase the number of youth and their parents who agree to participate in the Diversion Program as an alternative to the traditional court process; 2) media literacy training for the Youth Group and adult coalition members; 3) collaboration with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) on efforts to reduce underage drinking by designing and carrying out projects consistent with MADD's statewide conference recommendations; and 4) participation in efforts of the MGH-Revere HealthCare Center, Revere Public Schools, and the North Suffolk Mental Health Association to map existing mental health and substance abuse services, identify best practices related to collaborative mental health services for children suitable for Revere, and design and implement a collaborative mental health program in the schools for youth between the ages of 9 and 13.
