Project Summary for 1999-JN-FX-0032 s4
The Canutillo Independent School District is the fiscal agent for the Canutillo Drug-Free Communities Coalition. The coalition serves El Paso, TX, and the surrounding rural areas with a population that is 87 percent economically disadvantaged and 90 percent Hispanic. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by providing intensive drug prevention awareness presentations, educational lessons from guest speakers, no-smoking initiatives, and drug prevention classes; hosting events including the Canutillo Action for Students and Adults; developing student mentoring programs with school faculty and community organizations; increasing afterschool projects; providing more drug prevention educational materials and guest speaker presentations in schools; monitoring the effectiveness of the program by administering the Texas Prevention Impact Index survey; and providing training and professional development to fill in gaps in service and providing information on how to effectively implement project activities.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) enhancing afterschool programs, which include a mix of academic, art, enrichment, and physical activities, for all students; 2) continuing to provide training for parents and school personnel in effective communication skills to increase awareness and maximize the support of the project's efforts; 3) instituting a formal recognition program for staff, family, and community members for their outstanding contributions to the project's efforts; and 4) reinforcing the unified youth crime prevention program among law enforcement agencies within the district.
