Description of original award (Fiscal Year 1999, $75,000)

The Inglewoods Coalition for Drug and Violence Prevention serves an urban area of the City of Inglewood and adjacent unincorporated areas of Lennox and Ladera Heights, with its population of 139,000 residents. In its current grant year, the coalition will continue to implement its program goals and objectives by providing activities that are designed to increase the protective factors that exist in the target area to deter youth from engaging in high-risk behaviors of drug use and gang participation; providing prevention education for youth by trained peer educators and for teachers by coalition staff; continuing to widely disseminate prevention materials through the coalition's clearinghouse; advocating to block approval for the opening of new off-site sale sites of alcoholic beverages in Inglewood and Lennox; collaboratiing with residents to support and build new block clubs; and using churches as regular points of resident outreach and community involvement.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) maintaining a group of five peer educators to conduct prevention education workshops for community residents, primarily for youth but also for adults; 2) increasing its focus on middle and elementary schools while also providing prevention education to youth in programs in the Parks Department and other settings; 3) disseminating substance abuse prevention information, which includes a wide variety of free booklets, fact sheets, and pamphlets for youth and parents, as well as videos, books and instruction manuals for teachers, through the coalition's clearinghouse; and 4) continuing to monitor requests for new conditional use permits to open alcohol outlets for off-site sales.
