PROJECT SUMMARY 1999-JN-FX-0012

The Community Prevention Partnership of Berks County coalition serves Berks County, PA, an ethnically and geographically diverse area with a population of approximately 373,638. Since its inception, the Community Prevention Partnership of Berks County coalition has recorded a number of significant accomplishments, most notably, implementing activities that have resulted in marked decreases in the perceived availability of beer, wine coolers, liquor, tobacco, marijuana, and other illegal substances. In addition, the group has developed numerous community partnerships and coalitions that have implemented drug-free alternative activities for youth and coordinated various events to teach parents about the importance of communicating with their children about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, the Community Prevention Partnership of Berks County coalition, in its fifth year, will implement the following strategies: 1) continuing to decrease the availability of beer, wine coolers, liquor, tobacco, marijuana, and other illegal substances; 2) continuing to increase communication about the harmful effects of substance abuse through training programs and family activities; 3) increasing the number of students who recognize the harmful effects of substance abuse through educational workshops and health fairs; 4) decreasing the age of first use and frequency of use by utilizing education programs and alternative activities; 5) increase coalition membership and participation through networking meetings and community mobilization workshops; 6) enhancing prevention planning and prevention efforts; and 7) increasing community awareness of the coalition's activities by utilizing a media campaign.
