Project Summary for 1999-JG-FX-0075

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sangamon County in collaboration with Juvenile Court Services of Sangamon County and the Springfield Public Schools Unit District Number 186 propose to expand one-to-one mentoring services to court involved youth residing in Springfield, Illinois.

The target population for this program is youth ages 7 to 14 that are enrolled in Springfield Public Schools Unit District #186. All youth will be referred by the Juvenile Court Services. Adult mentors will be recruited from the Teamsters, other Labor Unions, and business. They will be thoroughly screened and well-trained.

The mentor and mentee will spend at a minimum of 3 hours per week for a period of at least one year. Mentors will meet with their mentees for lunch at school, work in the computer lab, and attend school programs. Mentors will be encouraged to work with the mentee on homework or academic activities. Other match activities may include taking trips to colleges and universities, visiting the work place of the mentor, cultural events, eating out, going to the library, sporting events, or just hanging out.
