Through a collaborative effort between CIS and the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD), the Student Buddy program will target children at the elementary level to prevent them from dropping out of school in the future, as well as help them develop into academically and socially successful individuals. The students served by this program will be among the most likely to drop out of school without a positive adult role model - or buddy - to support them.
Volunteers will meet with the student during lunchtime at school. If there is a telephone in the home, volunteers also can talk weekly with their students. During summer, there will be opportunities for buddies to participate in summer activities, and the program encourages the continuation of lunchtime meetings.
