The Rockland Alliance for Prevention (RAP) sustains a county-wide, youth-focused initiative built on a series of community assessments identifying risk factors among Rockland youth. Located directly northwest of New York City across the Hudson River, the RAP is coordinated by a Steering Committee and operated through several subcommittees that work in collaboration with local government, service agencies, and other various organizations. RAP will continue to pursue the following six goals: 1) reduce and prevent ATOD use among youth; 2) increase perception and understanding regarding risks of ATOD use among youth; 3) increase parent/teen communication regarding ATOD use among families; 4) reduce and prevent the incidence of violence among youth with a focus on issues of diversity; 5) enhance pro-social skills and asset-building strategies for youth; and 6) enhance the knowledge base, capacity, effectiveness, and linkages among local prevention programs reaching out to and serving youth. Strategies to accomplish these goals include: 1) information dissemination through underage drinking brochures, the Networking for Prevention newletter, the coalition website, a youth volunteer service opportunities directory, and PRIDE survey results; 2) trainings for youth and families including Youth Speak-Ups, a media advocacy series, parenting skills classes, police officer education, asset-building opportunities, and violence prevention workshops; 3) information-sharing and skill-building forums such as Cottage Meetings, local Red Ribbon events, and a sustained media campaign; and 4) technical assistance for local youth-serving organization.
