PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 98-JN-FX-0091 S-4

CADRE of Staunton, Inc. will continue to work toward its goals of reducing substance abuse among youth by addressing local risk and protective factors, and to strengthen collaboration between agencies and individuals who are committed to preventing and reducing substance abuse among youth. These goals will be achieved through activities such as: School-based prevention teams which will continue to coordinate drug education activities for youth, including a student retreat. After-school tutoring that will be provided to students needing assistance. Teachers will participate in an in-service training session on adolescent use and abuse of tobacco and other substances. CADRE will continue to conduct community workshops to increase awareness of the prevalence of use and abuse of tobacco and other substances among youth. Parenting classes, focusing on communication, anger management, and conflict resolution skills, will continue. Peers Utilizing the Leadership Skills of Students at Risk (PULSAR) leadership retreats will continue to be offered to at-risk students. CADRE staff will contract with tutors to provide services to students. CADRE will make presentations and provide information on tobacco use among teens to coaches of intramural sports programs. CADRE Board members, Valley Community Services Board members, Valley Community Services Board and Office on Youth Staff will provide a "Students Pledge Against Tobacco" program in Staunton/Augusta/Waynesboro school district.
