Project Summary for 1998-JN-FX-0057 (S-4)

For the past four years, the Mayor's Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse has been implementing Youth CARE. This program has had a successful history of providing substance abuse prevention for middle school students in the four Enterprise community neighborhoods in Providence. The fifth year, Youth CARE will continue to focus on long term goal achievement as well as expand the scope of effort in specific areas. The first goal is to reduce alcohol and marijuana use among middle school aged youth in four target enterprise communities through: reducing 30 day prevalence of alcohol and marijuana through After School Club, implementing Life Skills, peer mentoring and alternative activities; and b) increasing the perceived risk of using alcohol and marijuana through After School Club, Youth Corp, and Summer Club. The second goal is to continue to maintain and increase citizen participation in substance abuse reduction efforts through; a) engaging at least 40 high school age youth; b) maintaining the participation of at least 20 parents in the target community in both school and Youth CARE activities, and c) providing training to parents to facilitate better communication of expectations and increased monitoring of their children. The third goal is to sustain and increase coordination and collaboration on youth substance abuse between communities, federal, state and local governments and private substance abuse providers through: a) expanding membership in Mayor's Council; b) continuing to research funding opportunities and develop proposals for collaborative efforts; c) involving the community in needs assessment surveys, focus groups, etc.
