Project Summary For 1998-JN-FX-0037 (S-3)

The Lower Brule Drug Free Communities Project, a.k.a., TEAM (Tribal Empowerment Anti-drug/alcohol and violence Movement) works in conjunction with various community organizations providing evening, weekend and summer education, recreation and cultural activities with emphasis on instilling a core set of values (attachment to school, community and family, independence and generosity) in the community's youth. Personal living skills including information on improving self-esteem, assertiveness versus aggressiveness, anger management, and collage preparation is also be offered. Intended outcomes include a reduction in risk factors and an increase in protective factors as they relate to substance abuse in communities and an overall reduction in substance abuse among youth anf adults. The goals T.E.A.M are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and adults; 2) establish and empower collaboration among Tribal,Federal,State, and local governments as well as health and social service agencies, schools and other programs to support community coalition efforts that demonstrate a long term commitment to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth; and 3) identify and secure funding for continuing program activities.
