Project Summary for 1997-MU-MU-0005

The purpose of Safe Kids/Safe Streets Community Approaches To Reducing Abuse and Neglect and Preventing Delinquency is to break the cycle of early childhood victimization and later juvenile or adult criminality, and to reduce child and adolescent abuse and neglect and resulting child fatalities. It strives to do this by providing fiscal and technical support for local efforts to restructure and strengthen the criminal and juvenile justice systems to be more comprehensive and proactive in helping children and adolescents and their families. The program has an additional goal to implement or strengthen coordinated management of abuse and neglect cases by improving policy and practice of the criminal and juvenile justice systems and the child welfare, family services, and related systems. This project proposes to conduct a supplemental 1-year study that examines case-specific process and outcome data at
three sites. The project will also seek to expand the range of aggregate (agency-specific)indicators bearing on outcomes for children and families. Two key questions that form part of the process evaluation are; 1) Is the formal child protection system operating differently and producing different outcomes for children and families than it did before Safe Kids/Safe Streets? and 2) How has Safe Kids/Safe Streets contributed to those changes?
