The Safe Return program was created to enhance our national response to the problem of wandering among victims of Alzheimer's Disease and to ensure the safe return of these individuals to their caregivers by assisting in the identification of lost, memory impaired individuals.

The Safe Return program is composed of the following key elements:

' National central registry containing computerized information on memory impaired persons, and the caregivers and agencies to contact when these individuals are reported missing.

' Toll free 24 hour hotline telephone service to report missing Alzheimer's patients and access central registry.

' An additional toll free service to register people over the phone and for updating contact information.

' Unique identification numbers assigned to and worn by each registrant on metal bracelets, wallet cards, and clothing labels.

' Program Specialists who provide technical assistance and training to local Alzheimer's Association chapters, outside agencies and professionals, Alzheimer's families, and the general public.

' Safe Return/Alzheimer's disease education to assist local chapters in serving as a resource to law enforcement and emergency service personnel.

' Development of informational and educational materials.

' National oversight, support and coordination of operations.

' A national public awareness program campaign to create media exposure and enhance public awareness.
