This is a research proposal for the continuation of work under the aegis of the Program of Research on the Correlates and Causes of Delinquency (PRCCD) consisting of secondary data analyses. The Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS) examines the course of delinquency, substance use, and mental health problems in three samples of males. The samples were randomly drawn in 1987-88 from boys enrolled in the public schools in Pittsburgh, and after a screening procedure to increase the prevalence of high risk youth, have been regularly followed since then. Data collection has initially been funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention until 1991, from 1992 onward by the National Institute of Mental Health, and from 1997 onward by the National Institute of Drug Abuse. Secondary data analyses have been funded by OJJDP since 1993.
The PYS, under the auspices of the Program for the Study of the Causes and Correlates of Delinquency is a collaborative study with the Denver Youth Survey (Dr. D. Huizinga) and the Rochester Youth Development Study (Dr.T.Thornberry).
