Keiki 'O Ka 'Aina Preschool, a nonprofit Native Hawaiian organization located in the State of Hawaii, is proposing to implement a family-strengthening project designed to develop and sustain intentional mentoring relationships for children of incarcerated parents who have experienced the disruption, stress, and trauma associated with having a parent incarcerated and absent from the home. The project, titled Supporting Keiki of Incarcerated Parents Hawaii will target Native Hawaiians and provide services to children of incarcerated parents by serving as a bridge between children of incarcerated parents, caregivers, family members, correctional institutions, schools, and the community through culturally responsive outreach, engagement, and family supportive services. Supporting Keiki of Incarcerated Parents Hawaii will provide culturally responsive supportive mentoring services and family strengthening activities 12 to 225 children of incarcerated parents ages 4–17. In addition to servicing children of incarcerated parents, Keiki 'O Ka 'Aina Preschool will also provide culturally responsive outreach, engagement, and other supportive family strengthening services to enrolled COIP’s caregivers, siblings, and family members, ultimately serving over 675 individuals over the 3-year project period. Keiki 'O Ka 'Aina Preschool will enhance and implement Supporting Keiki of Incarcerated Parents Hawaii to be a culturally, age, and developmentally appropriate mentoring program designed specifically for children of incarcerated parents in Hawaii that aligns with research and evidence on effective mentoring approaches.
