Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $45,000)
Wyandotte County, like many regions, has experienced a concerning rise in opioid and fentanyl use among its youth population, contributing to increased violent criminal activity. To address these issues, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) aims to launch additional youth programs fostering positive police interactions and imparting essential life skills. Initiatives planned include summer youth academies, a youth football camp, and driver’s education instruction. By engaging youth in these activities, KCKPD anticipates a decrease in violent crime arrests and opioid/Fentanyl overdoses, aiming to cultivate supportive environments where young people can flourish through innovative community strategies.
