Just Us Murals Project (JUMP)

In collaboration with the Rapid City Arts Council, the Pennington County State’s Attorney Office will increase access to high-quality arts programs for justice-involved youth. Based on Native American culture, the Just Us Murals Project (JUMP) will serve an estimated 300 participants in the county’s diversion and detention programs. JUMP participants will work in groups to generate artistic ideas and relate knowledge and personal experience to make art. Participants will additionally convey their ideas and experiences through presentation of artworks to their families. By offering culturally relevant arts opportunities, the program will also support development of positive social skills and promote productive peer interaction and healthy activities for youth while engaging families and the community. The expected results for participants are fewer disciplinary infractions, greater compassion for themselves and others, healing from trauma, and recognition for artistic achievement. Anticipated longer-term outcomes are improved child welfare and reduced delinquency and recidivism.
