Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $750,000)
The Michigan State Police (MSP) will partner with National Drug Endangered Children, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), and Catholic Human Services (CHS) to expand provider training across the state, with a particular focus on areas with the highest rates of opioid and other drug overdoses and hospitalizations that are identified using the MDHHS Substance Use Disorder Data Repository. MSP will also partner with MDHHS to support a pilot Peer Navigator program for parents wherein a peer with lived experience helps caregivers access substance use treatment and supports safe parenting during the first year of a child’s life. In doing so, the Peer Navigator program supports new parents in recovery and maintains a connection with at-risk infants in their home environment. Lastly, MSP will partner with CHS to identify drug-endangered children and youth who are directly engaging in substance use in a school-based restorative justice program
