Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $746,277)
The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians proposes to design and implement a Tribal Drug Treatment Court Program to serve Tribal youth. It will provide comprehensive services for juveniles with substance use disorders who have come into contact with the juvenile justice system. Services will also be made available to the families of the youth who will be served. The primary goal of the program is to reduce delinquent behavior and substance use by providing community support for youth to make healthy choices and live a healthy lifestyle. The proposed juvenile drug treatment program is designed to divert juvenile offenders who need a highly structured, closely supervised program from out-of-home placement or juvenile facilities. The first 12 months of this program will be a planning process to ensure program success. A multidisciplinary advisory team will meet weekly the first 3 months and then biweekly the following 9 months to conduct research, identify all community supports/services that will assist youth and their families, and design a program that will include cultural practices of the Chippewa Tribe.
