Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $439,918)
The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office (MSAGO) has been the lead agency for the the ICAC task force since 2007. Since then, the task force has led the state to incorporate new and more effective methods of investigation, kept pace with the everchanging face of technology, and worked diligently to ensure the safety and security of Mississippi’s children. With Mississippi’s population at nearly 3 million people, the task force is working to expand the number of its affiliates and their individual effectiveness and is seeking new tools in the fight against child exploitation and abuse. Continued funding will help the MSAGO to achieve our mission to enhance enforcement and investigative actions, digital forensic work, and prosecution of offenders, and to expand our role in educating the state’s law enforcement and public on the current dangers facing our children.
ICAC enforcement and investigative work is a two-prong approach entailing proactive and reactive casework. Proactive investigations include quarterly multi-jurisdictional undercover operations. Reactive casework address CyberTips and traditional complaint sources from the public. These investigations are possible due to the twelve investigators the MSAGO has dedicated to conduct child exploitation investigations and to empower the state’s law enforcement community to lead their own cases.
