Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $437,500)
NW3C, a Virginia-based 501 (c)(3) national nonprofit organization, has developed and delivered high-tech crime investigation, digital forensics, criminal intelligence, economic crime investigation, and other criminal justice training and technical assistance for more than 40 years. NW3C will develop and deliver new and advanced training on five modules of the EZTools toolset and the KAPE tool.
All courses will feature interactive exercises, pre- and post-tests, and certification. Courses will be IADLEST certified, which is recognized for POST credit in 36 states. NW3C will provide the training in four modalities: on-demand online, in-person classroom, webinars, and conference presentations.
Four independent online on-demand self-paced training courses will be delivered via the NW3C web-based learning management system. The learning objectives for these online courses include the preparation of USB drives for on-scene triage and downloading the EZTools toolset, the ShellBags Explorer tool, the Prefetch tool, the Timeline Explorer tool, the LECmd tool, and the JLECmd tool. Additional topics include the theory and practice of digital forensic triage, first responder testimony considerations, integration of digital forensic triage and digital forensic examinations, and the forensic triage model.
A two-day classroom-based course will be delivered six times during the grant period at locations hosted by ICAC task forces. The content will include advanced training that expands the topics and skillsets covered by the online courses, with a focus on the KAPE tool. Each of the tools in the EZTools toolset can be used independently, but when combined with KAPE work as a powerful multi-functional forensic triage capability.
