American Samoa assures the adoption of PREA standards while working towards achieving full compliance according to the PREA act of 2003 in its single juvenile detention center. It is important to identify necessary critical steps to take in order to reach full compliance. The PREA allocation from its Title II Formula awards of 2021 and 2022 will be utilized to implement PREA standards in the territory. The American Samoa SAA invited a DOJ PREA certified auditor to conduct an unofficial pre-assessment to gather information and recommendations of the necessary steps that needs to be taken in order for American Samoa to be in Compliance with PREA standards. The SAA will support the Department of Corrections in utilizing and presenting recommendations of corrective action plans from the pre-assessment to government leaders and stakeholders so necessary policies and procedures shall be established accordingly. This allocation will be utilized for PREA staff training and educational materials for critical positions vital to the establishment of PREA.
