Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2021, $1,965,143)

The YMCA of San Francisco (YSF) is requesting funds to add therapeutic group mentoring in 12 states over a three-year period. Reach & Rise®, currently the subject of a national research project provides one-to-one mentoring to youth living in risk - helping to address some of the most critical challenges facing young people today.   Since 2009 the YMCA of San Francisco has delivered evidenced based mentoring services to thousands of youth and their parents across the nation. The Reach & Rise model incorporates quality mentoring practices by enhancing each benchmark of the Elements of Effective Practices with a therapeutic approach. This approach integrates cognitive behavioral mentoring strategies (CBM) that helps youth positively engage in society while reducing rates of truancy, substance use, and unmet mental health challenges that often results in juvenile justice system engagement. Under this proposal, Reach & Rise aims to engage 1,632 youth in 12 states, by the end of the three-year period. The Reach & Rise mentor training equips volunteers with the competencies needed to understand the impacts of the target population and understand their role in intervening. To reduce involvement in the juvenile justice system, the program will focus on providing an opportunity for more youth to receive social, emotional and behavioral support in a supportive peer group environment. A central feature and contributing factor to the success of a Reach & Rise participant is the involvement of child’s family. Each Site Coordinator tracks all activities and information regarding recruitment efforts, referrals, participation in trainings and match meetings and enters data into the YSF online system monthly. The National Director monitor to ensure all required Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) of 1993 related outputs, outcomes, and performance measures are being met. Reach & Rise serves youth living in both rural and urban areas, involved in the justice system or at-risk of entering the system, presenting with a host of school-related risk factors, and youth struggling with emotional and mental health needs.
