National Archive of Criminal Justice Data

The Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Institute of Justice, and OJJDP sponsor the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data.

NACJD facilitates research in criminal and juvenile justice through the preservation, enhancement, and sharing of computerized data resources; through the production of original research based on archived data; and through specialized training workshops in quantitative analysis of crime and justice data.

OJJDP requires that funded researchers archive their data with NACJD at the conclusion of the project. (See Grantee Guidance for Data Archiving for more information.) This ensures that the data will be preserved, curated, and made accessible for secondary analysis. By archiving the data, researchers enhance the potential impact of the original study because additional researchers will have the opportunity to replicate the findings and explore new areas of analyses.

Registering for Access

Anyone can search or browse data and read descriptions of the data sets maintained at NACJD. Data can be accessed by registering with NACJD. When creating your account, you will also be able to:

  • Set preferences.
  • View your prior download history.
  • Subscribe to receive an e-mail when a study you've previously downloaded is substantially updated.

Read NACJD's Frequently Asked Questions for more information on downloading data and data formats.

Statistical Briefing Book

OJJDP also makes some data available through analysis and dissemination tools on its Statistical Briefing Book. These data analysis tools give users quick and easy access to detailed statistics on juvenile crime and victimization and about youth involved in the juvenile justice system.
