Case 8

Victim Services Unit
Juvenile Justice Center
626 South Sixth Street
Minneapolis, MN 55415

The Program: The mission of the Victim Services Unit is to inform, educate, counsel, support, and empower victims of crime so they can become full participants in the justice system. Services provided to juvenile offenders include job assistance and transportation to and from worksites. Between 5 and 10 percent of the offenders meet their victims.

Typical Case: Two boys assaulted another boy who had been selling candy for a school fundraiser in the school gym and stole the youth s money and candy. As a result of the assault, the victim required emergency medical treatment for a cut above his eye.

School officials retrieved the money and candy from the offenders and returned it to the victim. The court ordered full restitution on a "joint and several" basis, including payment of all of the victim's medical expenses.
