Did You Know?

Combined data from 1996 and 2001 surveys show that 97 percent of adolescents ages 15–17 who lived with their married, biological parents were enrolled in school, compared with 94 percent of adolescents who lived with a single parent and 80 percent of adolescents who lived with neither parent.

These facts about America's youth were cited by Claude A. Allen, Former Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, in his keynote address at the "Building on Success" conference featured in this issue of OJJDP News @ a Glance. Drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau's Survey of Income and Program Participation, the statistics are reported in America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being 2005, which can be accessed through OJJDP's Statistical Briefing Book.
