Case 4

Cheektowaga Community Service Restitution Program
Youth Engaged in Service (YES)
Department of Youth and Recreational Services
c/o Town Hall
Cheektowaga, NY 14227

The Program: Focusing on the community service aspect of restitution, this program develops community service work crews, supervises offenders at worksites, and provides educational and social activities.

Typical Case: An 18-year-old male high school junior, with no previous arrests, was charged with second-degree assault after an incident in which the victim suffered a broken nose and the loss of two front teeth. The charge was reduced to disorderly conduct, and the offender was sentenced to perform 50 hours of community service within a 4-month timeframe. The client was interviewed by the YES director and deemed appropriate for the program. After a consultation between the director and the offender, a schedule of community service was established. The client was responsible for his own transportation and was expected to perform the assigned tasks in a professional manner. He successfully completed the 50-hour requirement within the timeframe, and a letter attesting to fulfillment of the obligation was sent to the sentencing judge.
