Since its inception in 1996, the AMBER (America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response) Alert program is credited with the successful recovery of 397 children. Almost 90 percent of these recoveries have occurred since October 2002 after President Bush called for a nationally coordinated AMBER Alert program during the first White House Conference on Missing, Exploited, and Runaway Children. There are a total of 120 AMBER Alert programs nationwide: 53 statewide plans, 29 regional plans, and 38 local plans.
For more information on missing children, see the article "DOJ Observes Missing Children's Day 2008" in this issue. Additional information on the AMBER Alert Program can be found at the Web site here.
