Follow these required steps to successfully apply for a grant

1. Request a Data Universal Numbering system (DUNS) Number

  • A DUNS number is a unique 9-digit identifier for businesses and entities.
  • Applicants must have a DUNS number for their business or entity prior to applying.
  • Visit http://fedgov.dnb.com/webform or call 1-866-705-5711.
  • Process time: 1-2 business days.

2. Register with the System for Award Management (SAM)

  • In SAM, your company/business/organization is referred to as an entity.
  • All applicants for OJP awards must register and maintain current registrations in the SAM database.
  • Applicants must update or renew their SAM registration annually to maintain active status.
  • Registrations and renewals can be completed at SAM.gov.
  • Time length: varies-may take several weeks. 

3. Request an Authorized Organization Representative (AOR) and Grants.gov Username and Password

  • Complete AOR profile and create a username and password at Grants.gov.
  • Learn more about the registration process for:
    • Individuals
    • Organizations and other entities
  • Time length: same day.

4. Follow the E-Business Point of Contact (EBiz POC) Steps in Grants.gov

  • The E-Biz POC is an organization applicant responsible for the administration and management of grant activities for his or her organization, which includes authorizing Grants.gov roles.
  • EBiz POC must confirm the AOR role request via Grants.gov. For details, refer to the Grants.gov Online User Guide.
  • To confirm AOR role request, the E-Biz POC will need the Marketing Partner Identification Number (MPIN) password that was obtained by registering with SAM.
  • Time length: same day.
